While in hospital recovering from a bleeding ulcer, Morse is given a book by the wife of a recently deceased patient. It tells the story of a young girl murdered on the Oxford canal a hundred years previously and Morse becomes convinced that the two men convicted and hanged were innocent. He sets out to prove this from his hospital bed.
