Gretel Wachtel remained in Hamburg throughout the War, joining with the German resistance fighters. She helped the local Catholic priest to protect those being hunted by the SS and was almost betrayed when hiding a Jewish doctor in her coal cellar. Arrested by the Gestapo and interned in 1945 she was finally liberated by the British Army.
