SHOPPING, SEDUCTION & MR SELFRIDGE

By Lindy Woodhead

Synopsis

In 1909 Harry Gordon Selfridge, an American retailer, opened Oxford Street's first purpose built department store, the eponymous Selfridge's. It's opening was heralded by the biggest advertising campaign of the day. Thirty years later he was ousted in a boardroom coup, and died in 1947 virtually penniless.
