Zoli, a young Roma girl living in Czechoslovakia in the 1930s, suffers at the hands of fascists and later under the Nazis. She then becomes a singer, and unusually for a Roma, teaches herself to read and write. Following the publication of her work, the government tries to use her to help ‘settle’ gypsies and her community condemns her.
