First book in 'Cairo Trilogy'. Set in Cairo between the wars, this is the story of Ahmad, a middle-class shopkeeper, who forces his wife and daughters to live a sheltered life, while at night he explores the pleasures of Cairo. To his sons he is a tyrant and they live in fear of his temper.

Book 3 of 'Cairo Trilogy', sequel to 'PALACE OF DESIRE' (6587). In this book we see the shaping of modern Egypt through the eyes of Ahmad Al Jawad’s three grandsons. One is a communist activist, another a Muslim fundamentalist and the third is on the threshold of a political career.
