Synopsis

Ruby O'Hagen, brought up in a convent, is chosen at fourteen to be a lady's companion. This new life does not last and she soon sinks to the slums of Liverpool with two children to support. At the outbreak of WW2 she is asked to look after a large house which becomes a refuge to friends and family alike.
