WW2 has just ended and twelve-year-old Rusty comes back home to Britain after being evacuated to the US. It comes as a shock adapting to the strict discipline of her family, after the warmth and openness of her adopted American family. Rusty is sent to an horrific boarding school, before finally running away as her search for happiness becomes more and more desperate.

At the start of World War Two, young Will is evacuated to the country and is billeted with Tom Oakley a gruff widower. Very gradually a deep bond develops between the two which has a dramatic effect on both their lives.

In 1949 post-war Britain, Henry’s only escape from his annoying, stepfamily is the cinema. For his school project he is given a camera, but he's initially disgusted to be put in a group with Jeffries, the son of a man who went AWOL, and Pip, born illegitimate; but he's about to learn that tolerance and friendship are more important than social stigma.
