THE DARK TIDE

This, Vera Brittain's autobiographical first novel, published in 1923, is an account of life in Oxford and London following the First World War. It was written when she shared a flat with Winifred Holtby, the friend she made at Oxford University and who helped Vera survive the crushing blows of the war.

Vera Brittain tells of the woman who helped her survive the First World War - the writer Winifred Holtby. They met at Oxford immediately after the war and their friendship continued through Vera's marriage and their separate but parallel writing careers, until Winifred's death at 37.

A portrait of a young girl's life in pre-1914 England which aims to give a vivid and passionate personal record of the years 1900-1925 and convey the essence of the common experience of war. It is also intended as a memorial to a lost generation.
