Whilst writing an article about hypothermia Philip Dryden gets drawn into the previous lives of two unfortunate people who have frozen to death.

When the coffin of murdered pub landlady Nora Tilden is exhumed, there's a grim discovery - the twisted corpse of a young black man, killed and dumped in the grave on the night Nora was buried 28 years earlier. DI Peter Shaw, DS George Valentine and their team are put on the case, but are baffled by this brutal murder.

On a hot August day in 1994, young man is stabbed and left to bleed to death on an uninhabited island off the North Norfolk coast. The case is never solved. Twenty years later, Marianne Osbourne is found dead in her bed, a wartime cyanide pill lodged in her throat. Is there a link to the 1994 murder? DI Peter Shaw is in charge of the case.

THE GREAT DARKNESS

1939, Cambridge. The opening weeks of the Second World War, and the first blackout envelops the city. Detective Inspector Eden Brooke, a wounded hero of the Great War, takes his nightly dip in the cool waters of the Cam. But daylight reveals a corpse on the riverside, the body torn apart by some unspeakable force. Brooke investigates, and within hours there is another victim, slaughtered under cover of The Great Darkness. But what links these crimes of the night?

THE MOON TUNNEL

Philip Dryden is reporting on the discovery of the body of a WWII prisoner in a tunnel from a PoW camp in the fens, found in an archeological dig. Only when a recent murder is committed do the police also investigate the death in the tunnel.

NIGHTRISE

Journalist Philip Dryden is shocked to be informed by police that his father has been killed in a car accident - as he always believed that he drowned during the fenland floods of 1977, 35 years before. At the same time, two unrelated cases are demanding Dryden's professional attention: As Dryden pieces the clues together, he realizes that the three cases may be related after all....

THE SKELETON MAN

Local reporter Philip Dryden is with the army, on practice manoeuvres at the abandoned hamlet of Jude’s Ferry, when a skeleton hanging from a noose is discovered in the cellar of an old pub. Two days later a terrified man is pulled from the river with no idea of who he is and only one name on his lips, “Jude’s Ferry”.

THE WATER CLOCK

When two Fenland murders are linked to an awful event in 1966, local reporter Philip Dryden senses a great story. But as the disturbing truths are revealed they lead him back to a personal tragedy of two years earlier.
